Announcing Reader Appreciation Project

By Bes on Mar 18, 2007.

Hello, and thank you for visiting the Reader Appreciation Project. As the name suggests, this site is here to show Reader Appreciation. The RA Project aims to show readers that they are one of the most important assets a blogger can have, and the RA Project also aims to show among other things how bloggers can treat their readers.

What is the Purpose of RA Project?

  • To show you why appreciating readers is important
  • To show you why appreciating bloggers is important
  • To reward readers without making them do extra work
  • To not only make promises of appreciation, but to actually appreciate
  • To promote honest and open communication between bloggers and readers
  • To promote good ethics between everyone on blogs
  • To promote transparency by showing you how you can benefit blogs in specific cases, and how blogs can help you in specific cases

How was RA Project born?

The RA Project was created because of noticing a lot of bloggers posting on their blogs that they appreciate their readers, yet besides words, they did not do anything more. Bloggers make money and traffic through comments and visitors. A blogger writes content to get a comment, which means both the blogger and the reader have helped each other in some way. However, a reader is also spending time reading a blog on a regular basis and writing, whereas that same reader is not returned any favor by the blogger. A blogger writes a post and gets comments, traffic and money from it. A reader, on the other hand, writes comments, reads and spends time on a blog and does not get much in return.

Ronald Huereca approached me in early 2007 and asked if I would like to start something to address this issue. I had been noticing the problem of readers not being appreciated for many years now, so we brainstormed along with Shawn Blanc and came up with the RA Project.

How you are involved in the RA Project

Best things can come last, sometimes. Since you are the reader and this site is all about you and us, you also run the show. Tell us what you feel. Tell us what you want to read. Tell us how you want to be treated. You can even write for us. There are no no-follow tags here. There is no red tape here. There is only you and us here. Interact with us directly, and together we can help change the blog mentality that tends to appreciate only with two words “Thank you”, and nothing else, in response to the efforts readers put into making blogs successful.

Why is this site about us, the bloggers, also? Because everyone is a blogger and a reader! When you write a comment, you are blogging. It is as simple as that. When you read something and have any opinion of it, you are also blogging and reading. Blogging does not mean you have to open a blog and write for it. Blogging means to participate in any manner that promotes the very concept of blogging.

What will happen on this site?

A couple of things will keep happening on a regular basis to increase awareness and promote friendly interactions and relations between bloggers and readers. Following are some of the many things we have already planned to get started:

  • Articles that talk about appreciating others
  • Prizes that will be given away without making you work hard for them
  • Examples of both good and weird ways to appreciate both users and bloggers
  • Myths and stereotypes of helping readers and bloggers
  • Feature content written by you
  • Answer any questions people may have

So please join us, and help us promote appreciation for each other online. The Reader Appreciation Project depends on your support to promote Reader Appreciation.

Thank you.
