WP Ajax Edit Comments 1.1 RC1

For those who are ambitious and rather gutsy, I have a release candidate ready of WP Ajax Edit Comments 1.1 RC1. There have been numerous bug fixes and feature additions. Some of which, I will highlight here. When the final version is released, I will update the main plugin page with screenshots and support information.

Please note that this version is very different from v1.065 and you will not be able to revert back if you install this version. The 1.1 RC1 is currently installed here, so feel free to leave a test comment on this post to see what happens from a user’s perspective. The main changes are on the admin side, however.

New Features

  • JavaScript overhaul to jQuery
  • Times out after fifteen seconds.
  • Other Plugin authors can hook into the plugin via JavaScript
  • Fixed style bugs. Everything is controlled by external CSS file.
  • Timer shows up on each comment left by non-admin.
  • Can turn off and on the countdown timer in the admin panel.
  • “You may edit” message shows up via JavaScript instead of PHP
  • Can customize the “You may edit the comment…” message in the admin panel.
  • Able to Edit|Delete|Spam from a post.
  • Can turn off the Edit|Delete|Spam buttons from the User’s panel.
  • When you make an edit, the comment is re-checked with Akismet (if installed). This only affects non-admin. If a comment is flagged as spam, the user is alerted and the comment can no longer be edited. You also have the option in the admin panel to customize the spam message a user sees.
  • You have the option to have an e-mail sent to you everytime a non-admin user makes an edit. This is disabled by default for obvious reasons.
  • The admin panel now tracks the number of edits made by non-admin users.
  • Other numerous security and bug fixes. Too numerous to name.
  • CSS issues fixed to be compatible with *most* themes.

RC1 is currently installed here, so feel free to leave a test comment on this post to test out the timer feature.

    This is a test.

Edit: Neat. I like the countdown timer.

Hi Ronald, I tried this on my blog. I had the following problems with it:

    1. The countdown didn’t appear - I got empty ()

    2. Instead of opening a window with the text of my comment in it opened a window with lots of html code in, which was not my comment.

    3. When I said ’save’ or ‘cancel’ it just opened the window full of code again. So I was stuck in an endless loop

I wonder why it works on your blog and not mine?

    Helen,

What you’re seeing is some security protection to make sure that was indeed you clicking on the link. Apparently there’s some flaw that’s not allowing it to work for you.

I assume you are editing like normal? Is there anything you’re doing for this site that you are not doing for the one you are testing on?

Ronald, I’m happy to provide any information that would help. Do you want me to turn the plugin on again on my site so you can see what it does if you try it?

I’m not sure what would be different between my site and this one. I was using the same computer.

Btw, when my comment first appeared I got the empty brackets instead of the edit time countdown - is that a security issue too?

OK, one added issue of minor concern: I notice that more legit comments are being flagged by Akismet as spam. Maybe you want to double-check how it’s done?

    Helen,
It sounds like I need to re-think the user-side of security. Are you getting the same issues when logged in as admin on your site?

    Gene,
Is the Akismet problem after someone edits? If it is as someone posts a comment, I have no control over that.

Don’t know. I didn’t activate the function to notify me if a user edits, but I will.

    Peace,
    Gene

Ronald, I turned it on again if you want to go play with it on my blog http://www.mildenhall.net.

When I’m logged in as admin it gives me edit options; it opens the window with the right text in if I choose ‘edit’; but then it doesn’t respond right to the buttons ’save’ or ‘edit’ or ‘delete’ - it is stuck in a loop just like before with the comments box open.

    Helen,
Thanks for allowing me to test on your site. I was able to test with no problems.

I can see some problems perhaps if your referrals are somehow being blocked by a firewall or something. I’ll try to code something and send you the zip and see if it works. Is that okay?

Hi Ronald, yes, if you send me something I’ll try it out.

I sent you a test version via e-mail. This is just FYI just in case it ended up in your spam box.
