When Angry Readers Turn Into Writers

BluffGiven the ascending trend of the number of blog contests, we could conclude that readers like such contests. Usually, readers who participate have their own blogs, which they use to promote the contests, hoping to win, or at least to make some new friends among their blogging fellows. Depending on the organizer’s marketing skills, contests are more or less sucessful, loyal readers are more or less happy, and new readers may or may not come in large numbers. Seeing so much fun out there, aren’t you, the reader-blogger, tempted to host your own blog contest? If you do, let’s see what you need.

How Can One Organize a Blog Contest?

Simple: define some rules, set some prizes, write an article about that and promote your contest in any way you can.
The prizes can be anything you have disposable and which may interest your readers, such as money (an amount you can afford to give without thinking for the rest of your life what you could have done with it), webhosting, blog template redesign, logo design, pens, USB keys…
What if you have no money, no skills, no giveaways, nothing? Lots of bloggers found the answer: get some sponsors for your contest. There will always be companies or other bloggers interested in offering something in exchange for some good PR.

Unfortunately, this was not the case of Ashwin Khanna, a blogger who had no resources, but still wanted to host a contest on his blog. So, he announced a $2500 prize, watched happily how his readers took the bait and linked to his blog, and in the end, after changing the contest rules a couple of times, Ashwin announced that the prize was won by a free hosted wordpress blog, with no blogger name, a blog which was set up only two days prior to the lucky draw.

Lots of links for free, you would say. So Ashwin said, until some wise readers discovered the scam. You can read the whole story on ContestBlogger, who not only wrote about it, but also found a way to indulge the fooled readers, by setting up a Revenge Contest.

Amongst other reader-bloggers who wrote about this scam are:

Readers talk. And many of them also write. You want them on your side, so treat them with respect. If this case was not enough, please do check out some more reasons why bloggers should fear their readers. Afterwards, you are welcome back to share with us your thoughts about such cases.

Thanks for the link. I got taken by the scam, then once it was very obvious, moved a few things around and put a nofollow on the link. Sad that Ashwin went to that extreme to get links, but I guess greed has it’s price.

You are welcome, Thatedeguy. Too bad so many people were scammed. Although I still believe this Aswin could be a nice guy, he will have a tough time online from now on for sure. This is a good example when bad publicity is damaging. In fact, he damaged his reputation himself by doing such a shameful thing.

I thank you Contest Blogger, for the great job you are doing. It was very nice of you to organize this contest for the scammed fellows.

Thanks for the link. This guy is crooked and I hope it was worth it to him for his destroyed credibility. Hopefully people are deleting his links!

Yes Roberta, I think he got his lesson. It’s funny that he didn’t have the guts to stand up for his position. He deleted the contest entries from his blog. Too bad the world is small :)

Thanks for this post, Simonne. You’re always managing to discover various scandals, scams and other no-goodnik bloggers. I’ve never heard about this scam, nor about that blogger. I sure hope people added no follow attributes to all their links to that blog.

I also hope they add no follow. Maybe they are going to remove those links for good, because they lead to 404 pages anyway. I thought this story is worth sharing; maybe it will serve as a lesson for other “Ashwins”.

Wow. This guy totally screwed it up. Angry people are always more likely to vent their frustrations in whatever way possible versus those who are content with the way things are. Just goes to show you, once legit, stay legit. Once you lose it, you almost certainly can’t get it back.

Speaking of contests, I have a contest going on. Would this ContestBlogger guy be the one I should contact in order to let him know about my particular contest?

Jeff, it depends on what you are trying to achieve. Do you want him to talk about your contest? Do you need some kind of a validation?

By the way, for everyone else, Jeffro2pto is referring to his Web 2.0 Photo Contest, which ends on September 30th of 2007.

Jeff, ConstestBlogger announces all kind of contests and group writing projects, so if you feel like attracting more people in your contest, yes, you can write him.

More than holding fake contest Ashwin is also guilty for running a blog with content stolen from other blogs minus the credit to Original Author. I wrote about it here.
