Explain things to people who are new to some things
One of the best things you can do on your blog is to explain things to people who may be new to certain technologies and concepts. A person may not know what WordPress templates are, or how “online subversion” work. It may seem a waste of time to explain things to people who may be new to your site or a concept, but you will be expanding yourself and your blog if you also focus on people who can hopefully be your future readers. That is a really good way to appreciate readers.
Link to sites that explain things you are discussing
There are a couple of ways to explain things. One of the simplest ways is to link a certain term to a website that explains things in detail. For example, what if you talk about online “subversion” and a new person, like me, comes along and thinks “Hmmm, is this blog talking about subversion because they are the same as perversions? Is this a topic about perverts? Hmmm” For newbies like me, if you talk about Subversion, you can simply link the word Subversion to a site that tries to explain it, the way I just did in this very line.
Use acronyms to briefly describe words
Another way could be to include acronym tags on your site. For example, you can use
<acronym title="Sound a cat makes">meow</acronym>
to explain to people what a meow is, the way I just did in this very line. Hovering your mouse cursor over an acronym’ed word, like “meow”, shows you a brief summary of it.
Explain things yourself
Another way to explain things to people could be to write an introduction or a tutorial yourself. For example, I have a lot of introductions to write for myself and my friends, the way I wrote an introductory article describing what Memes are. Having an article on the introduction allows me to show such an introduction to others easily, if I ever talk about memes.
Point new people in the right direction please
So, the next time you feel that you do not need to describe in detail something that your direct, target audience already knows, you can try to see if you can help those that do not know about something. There are countless number of things that you yourself may not know about, so you can probably imagine why helping people, who may know a lot of things that you do not, find out about some things that you want to communicate to them. Even if you do not care about such people, it would be nice to let such people know about things, in case they were interested.
Can you think of other ways to help people find out about things via your writing or your blog/site?
