Treat Online Readers the Same as You Would Offline People

For many people, dealing with others online is much easier than dealing with others in person. You may not feel the need to respond to many e-mails from your readers, and you may feel that you simply need to say a simple “thanks” to your commentors all the time, simply to fulfill the obligation of responding to comments. Even though not paying proper attention to people online can seem like a normal thing to do, since many people assume that it is all right to act unfriendly on the internet, you should try to treat people based on the concept of interaction, and not on the communication medium. You should treat a person online the same way you would treat them in person.

It can be a mistake to assume online communication is completely different than offline communication

Because of the misunderstanding that different online communication mediums like e-mails, instant messages or even text messages are not in the same category as face to face interactions, many bloggers, while still leaving comments, have little or no interest in developing bonds with their readers. Many bloggers simply acknowledge reader comments, e-mails or messages and not interact with readers. Doing that all the time simply to fulfill an obligation can be the exact opposite of appreciation.

Treat online readers the same way you treat people in person

If you treat everyone similarly in the offline world, by simply acknowledging them and not paying them proper attention when it is needed, you can go ahead and do the same on your blog. Otherwise, treat each reader as if you either know them in person or you are interacting with them face to face. That is the bet way to appreciate someone online.

So does that mean I should also treat you the same offline as I do online? If that’s the case, beware of the day you meet me in real life. :)

    Great article Bes.

offline I treat different people differently and same goes for the online world - I can’t treat everyone the same - someone deserves and gets more of my attention, others don’t, otherwise it wouldn’t be fair if everyone was treated by me the same way.

Of course there are people who manage to make everyone feel very special, but I’m not one of them…
