What Does a Blogger Who Survived Hurricane Katrina?
By Simonne on Sep 1, 2008.
Hurricane Katrina brought a real disaster to New Orleans and surrounding areas. People who survived it found themselves in the situation of not having anymore house to sleep in, no more clothes to wear, and so many times, no more family, or even no more life.
But as the human brain is set to forget, after a while people came back to New Orleans and tried to re-build their lives on the ruins of their old ones. Some of those people are bloggers. Maybe you’ve read their blogs many times without knowing that they were running away from the hurricane as they were writing those posts.
I was thinking the other day at a friend of mine, who’s working with me on an internet project, and who excused himself to be late with some things because he had to prepare for the hurricane. I’m fortunate to live in a blessed area, with moderate climate. The biggest wind I’ve ever seen was barely able to put down a dead tree. I think that if I had to face such a disaster, survival would have taken the first spot in my priorities (and the next ten spots on my priorities list would have been empty).
Today I discovered that there are people like PB, who after surviving Katrina, is now running away from Gustav, and meanwhile he still finds time to make a video post. Unbelievable, while being away, he’ll have to pay some $300 a night (or $100 a night) for the hotel room, as far as I’ve understood from his video. Again, I don’t get this democracy which cannot find a solution for lodging these people who were terribly hit by Katrina and who are in danger to be devastated again, this time by Gustav. Why do they give names to those storms? Only to have somebody to blame it on for so many deaths?
I’ve never read PB’s former blog (which he recently sold), but I cannot stop myself from thinking that maybe other bloggers I read are in the same situation. What I know, is that there are bloggers who pray for PB and for all other people in distress.
I surely hope Gustav dies young. Do you?
i do. i was quite surprised by what happened with hurricane katrina. didn’t think the government would come up with such an ineffective response. and even after so much time has already passed, it surprises me to think that people continue to suffer hard times post-katrina, not having been helped to get back on their feet.
and now here comes gustav.

Luckily, I heard that meanwhile Gustav decided to get lost.
I’ve seen a documentary film about Katrina and New Orleans – I wonder how such things are possible – people were drowning and in Washington authorities knew everything went back to normal (I don’t know if that was the real story, or an exaggeration in that film).

Thanks for the interesting and useful information. Written well worth waiting for the next record. Read with interest. For the most part agree with the author, but some of the allegations are questionable ..

Its sad that people have to do this due to natural causes. Losing everything they have, spending their money in a hotel rather than getting their life back together, and then the government tries to help but fails miserably. Kudos to your friend to keeping his head up and keeping us informed on the way.

I cannot begin to imagine the desperation and suffering caused by such natural disasters. I’m lucky living in the UK, we don’t have hurricanes but we have had quite a lot of flooding recently. The weather is changing, the world is changing. We have to adapt, and that means governments as well as people. My heart goes out to all those who have lost everything through no fault of their own.

Maybe it’s human nature not to follow common sense and live in so uncertain place. But from the other poin of view noone can be safe anywhere because we never know what will be tomorrow. We only follow our destiny and comfort themself that it can’t happen with us.

Well written post. It’s a sad part of life that natural disasters come along and destroy peoples’ lives. But in a way, I have to ask, why do they come back to live there when they know that the area is prone to such devastation? Is their connection to the place in which they grew up so strong that they would elect to keep living there, after it destroyed their lives and is likely to destroy them again after they have rebuilt?

This was a really great accident. Your entire life to create and torment that would all disappear at once. Then you start to live life from the beginning without anything but with the great stress.

You are actually correct. Thing with life is, no matter how much disaster we encounter, we fall, eventually we have to stand and keep on going. That is life!

Natural disasters happends and altough it’s very sad for everybody and especially for the people in New Orleans we have to accept them as being part of our lives. What is more sad and revolting is that the government and even the community does so few for the people that are suffering from these disasters.

You are totally right. I can remember watching on SportsCenter whenever hurrican Katrina hit New Orleanes. It was amazing the help that he gave to the victims…

I agree that the execution of such a book, be it fiction or nonfiction, would be the key. This is especially true because immediately after Katrina, there was a “deluge”, if you will, of books about the storm and New Orleans in general. Some of these were truly wonderful telling, such as “One Dead In Attic” and “New Orleans, Mon Amour” others were just jumping on the trend of a popular subject.

Fortunately, in my country there is no such disaster.

. Much to learn from people such as yourself. Seems harder than I thought to keep up and learn all the things. I find myself learning through mistakes.
