Fishing With Cormorants: Do You Feel Like Being One?

Did you know that there are some Chinese provinces where fishermen still use an ancient technique called fishing with cormorants? It goes like this: the cormorant is tied a string around its neck, loose enough to let it breathe and allow the small fish to pass through, but tight enough to block the bigger fish in the cormorant’s throat. From time to time, the fisherman pulls the cormorants out of the water with the help of a long pole, and makes them spit the big fish. It can be a very productive technique, one can catch a lot of fish like that, while the birds seem to be happy with the process (they are previously trained, I have no idea how’s the training going on).

You’ll ask me what does this have to do with blogging, or with readers appreciation. Well, don’t you feel like one of those cormorants sometimes? You want to have a successful blog (whatever the meaning you give to success), so you try to train yourself and learn from the pros. You are happy with your learning, you manage to get some traffic, some loyal readers, even some money, but where is the really big fish? Woldn’t it be a chance that all important fish never reach your stomach, being stopped by the string around your neck? You are still satisfied and motivated, because you get some fish, but the fishermen (the pros, the authorities in your blogging domain) are even more motivated to have you out there, fishing with them and for them. And they would give you free training for that, but they’ll never teach you about the string which makes the difference. You’ll have to discover that by yourself.

Let’s take only one example of a “blogging with cormorants fisherman”: John Chow. Over the past year, he has trained lots of newbie bloggers, who are now capable of running their own blogs and making money out of those blogs, thanks to John’s advice and tips. How many of them have reached his level of income, audience, or his number of blog comments? Maybe none… But day after day, they spit their big fish back in John’s boat, by giving him thousands of comments, by writing reviews about his blog, by participating into his contests, by passing his pen, by making funny parodies of his blog, by arguing his methods, by making him even bigger. Perhaps some time ago, John Chow was a cormorant himself, but one day he got kissed by a princess and transformed into a fisherman. Or maybe he just realized his cormorant condition and decided to refuse it? Can you imagine that there was a time when John’s posts had only one comment? And even that comment was a pingback sent almost one year later?

Are you still waiting for your princess, or are you already training cormorants?

Well, whats the point? you think he is a huge sellout? yes he is..pushing all the limits of making money with a blog. But I can sure say he had some good marketing techniques and some solid luck to reach there at about 17k a month from a single blog. But I am sure a lot of bloggers will agree with me that this guy is nothing but money minded. I became a reader of his blog long before he had adsense on it. He had some really helpful posts back then..unlike these days where posts are just counts of reviewme offers and some guest posts. the quality has gone downhill, i can vouch for that…

btw, nice article, could have been better with a closing conclusion…

TheAnand, thank you for your comment. I left the article open-ended on purpose, in order to stimulate discussions and to let readers find their own conclusions (like you just did). By the way, I liked your idea of passing the pen :)

Interesting article. Never knew about that way of fishing :) John Chows ebook contained quite a bit of good information that allowed me to setup my blog with SEO in mind. Since then, I have yet to visit his site but I sure do hear alot about him all the time, especially since he released his August income earnings.

You know, all it would take is for something disastrous to happen where a bunch of readers don’t click on his links or purchase anything he offers on his site and he would be broke. But that guy knows how to bait his readers, hook line and sinker and they give him link backs and everything else as if he’s a blogging god.

Btw, this site is now the second pingback on that article, 2 years after the article was published LOL

 Jeff, you are right! I just sent another pingback to that post. I’m not saying John Chow does not offer helpful information for bloggers, because he does (or at least he did in his ebook and in his earlier articles). I used him for this analogy, because he was the best fit (in my opinion). But you can replace his name with any other from the A-list. Each of them has a bunch of cormorants ;)

    Simonne,

Just came across this post while stumbling :)

I think John is more inspirational than educational. I can easily point you to many other blogs which provide more solid material on making money online or with blogs. People are too enraptured with the public earnings bit.

But you do make a good point.. and I learned a new word today (”cormorants”) :)

Hey, Maki, thank you for stopping by. You are right, John is rather inspirational. I chose him as an example because his blog is illustrating well the analogy of cormorants fishing, as his readers put time and effort in giving him back the nuggets of his success (comments and participation). I also know a few blogs with much more useful information on making money online ;)

I’m glad you learned a new word: it was also new to me before writing this article :)
